Back again
First of all, I must apologize, it has been many years since I posted here to my blog. Things have been a whirlwind, and not all of it good.
But still, I am here, I am back, and I still intend to write on occasion.
To Share Or Not To Share
I am leaving the title kind of vague now, as it will become clearer soon.
This post, is intended as strawman, or a thinking piece. It may have some ideas or text that sounds, uhm, a bit inflammatory, a bit harsh, and a bit controversial. None of it is meant as being my personal opinion on something but a discussion article.
Article That Started All Of This
Here is a link to the article that started me doing all this thinking...
With the political issues in the US, and the very real threat it presents, I am wondering.... Should we still be sharing our infosec and intelligence knowledge with them? We have gone a long way to protecting ourselves from our usual opponents. But we haven't done anything to protect ourselves from our closest neighbor. What if the US actually did try to annex Canada? How would we defend ourselves?
Attacks in Cyberspace
Attacks in cyberspace almost always come before kinetic ones in the current war dogma. Could we really withstand a cyber attack from the US? We currently share just about everything with them. We share intel, we cooperate on law enforcement matters, and even our cyber presence depends greatly upon them.
And I know what you are thinking. This all sounds very far fetched. However, isn't it the JOB of intel and security to think up, and plan for, the edge cases? And what if they are not so much an edge case anymore. With our country continually being threatened by our 'friends' to the south, more work is needed to prepare ourselves. We need to be able to stand up on our own, and not require someone else for help.
Current Environment
We currently are experiencing threats constantly. We are being threatened by a narcissistic bully. He unjustly threatens our economics. He threatens our people. And he ever threatens our very existence as a country. And that is just to his 'friends' up north. He has been doing even more overseas. Threatening groups with ethnic genocide.
Conclusion
Now is the part I really lay my cards out on the table. I do feel we need to protect ourselves. We constantly preach of cooperation and mutual trust. But that mutual trust, seems to be much less mutual these days. We need to shore up not only our cybersecurity... But our self-reliance. I am heartened that Canada has experienced a way of patriotism, and nationalism to levels not seen since times of war. We need to show the world that we are both strong, AND free.
PS
To my American friends, I am sorry how this must sound. But I have to tell you, you allowed this to happen. Your president told you, even before the election, that he would use his position for his own financial, political, and narcissistic gain. He TOLD you who he was, and you allowed him into power. You are no longer a democracy, and I fear things will only get worse before they get better.
